BOOK EXCERPT
PUTTING OUT OF YOUR MIND by DR. BOB ROTELLA with BOB CULLEN.
2001, Pocket Books, Simon & Schuster. London.
He asked Tiger what he'd "seen" after he closed his eyes. Tiger would reply that he'd seen a "picture" of the hole. Earl taught Tiger to always see that mental picture of the hole before he struck the ball with his putter. He taught him not to worry about the mechanics of the stroke, just to make sure he saw that the target in his mind's eye before he putted the ball. He knew that Tiger's brain would take care of the rest more than often. It was inspired instruction. When Tiger is in clutch situations, when he falls back on his dominant habit, he's focusing tightly on his target, that picture in his mind. That's why he makes so many clutch putts.
'Do you know why I'm so goddamn good? I never moved my right knee.' Ben Hogan (1912-1997), to his caddie. 4-time PGA Player of Year; Grand Slam titles Champion, 4 U.S. Opens, 2 Masters, 2 PGAs and 1 British Open between 1946-53; 63 career wins.
